Square vs. GlossGenius for the solo chair

Square starts at $0 and bills you on the payment. GlossGenius charges a monthly fee and buys you a salon-native tool. Here's the honest breakdown for one chair.

Square and GlossGenius are the two names a solo stylist actually agonizes over, so read their numbers — all pulled from each vendor's own pages, linked below — and make up your own mind.The choice between them is really a choice between two philosophies. Square starts at zero dollars a month and makes its money on the payment. GlossGenius charges a real monthly fee and, in exchange, gives you a tool built for a salon rather than a coffee shop. But $0 isn't the same as free. Square makes its money when a client taps a card:In-person (Free plan): 2.6% + 15¢ per Square's fee schedule (verified July 2026)Online booking (Free plan): 3.3% + 30¢So the honest way to read Square isn't "the free one." It's "the one where the cost moved from a monthly line item into a percentage of every payment." For a lot of solo chairs that's a good trade — you pay in proportion to what you actually earn.

The math

Say you run $8,000/month in card payments at the chair, across roughly 80 appointments, mostly in-person.On Square Free (2.6% + 15¢): $8,000 × 2.6% = $208, plus 80 × 15¢ = $12 → ~$220/month in processing, $0 subscription.On GlossGenius Standard ($24 + its processing rate): you pay the $24 subscription on top of your card processing.Illustrative numbers only — your card volume, ticket, and mix of in-person vs. online are different. The point is the shape: Square's cost scales with what you swipe; GlossGenius's starts with a flat fee.

Because the cost is in the rate, Square's paid tiers rarely pay for themselves on money alone for a solo chair — moving to Plus buys a slightly lower rate, but the break-even card volume is far higher than most single stylists run. You move up a Square tier for a feature you need, not to save on processing.GlossGenius's fee buys design and salon-native featuresGlossGenius is the most solo-focused of the mainstream tools, and the monthly fee is the price of that focus. It looks and feels like a tool made for a chair, which Square — built for the convenience-store and cafe market — does not.Where the tiering bites: the features a cancellation-heavy stylist cares about most tend to sit above the entry tier. Read the plan comparison on their pricing page carefully and confirm which tier includes the specific thing you're buying it for, because "Standard" is not the plan with everything.Which one fits a solo chairBeing fair to both, because each earns it:Pick Square if you're already on Square for retail or another business, you're low-volume or just starting, and cancellations aren't the thing keeping you up. $0/month plus a competitive in-person rate is hard to argue with.Pick GlossGenius if the daily experience matters to you — you want a booking page that feels like yours, an integrated POS you'll actually use, and you're willing to pay a monthly fee for a tool that was designed for beauty rather than adapted to it.Where both leave a gap is the same place: cancellation recovery. Square's waitlist (a Plus feature) and GlossGenius's waitlist are both shared, first-come lists — when a slot opens, whoever taps first wins, notifications-on fence-sitters included. That's better than nothing, but it isn't the same as getting the regular you actually wanted back in the chair.Where ChairCal's narrower focus fitsWe didn't build ChairCal to beat Square or GlossGenius at being an all-in-one.
