Phorest for salons: an honest review

Phorest is a robust, marketing-heavy platform for established multi-staff salons. It's quote-priced with no public number — here's a fair read for a solo or small chair.

Full disclosure before anything else: we make ChairCal, mentioned at the end of this post. Phorest and ChairCal aren't really competitors — they're aimed at different-sized businesses — but stylists ask us how they compare, so here's a fair read. Everything about Phorest below is either from their own site or clearly attributed to a third party.Phorest is a serious platform. It's been around a long time, it's polished, and it's genuinely good at what it's built for: helping established, multi-staff salons run marketing, reputation, and client retention at scale. The honest question for a solo stylist or a small chair isn't "is Phorest good" — it is. The question is whether it's built for you, and whether you can find out what it costs before you talk to a salesperson.First problem: you can't see the priceHere's the thing that shapes everything else. Phorest does not publish a public price. The Phorest pricing page is a quote request — you fill in details about your salon and a salesperson gets back to you with a number tailored to your size and setup. That's a legitimate business model, especially for a platform that scales across salon sizes. But it has real consequences for a solo stylist evaluating tools: you can't do a quick side-by-side. Every other tool in this space puts a number on a page; Phorest puts a form. To even comparison-shop, you have to enter a sales conversation.

On the price

Phorest publishes no public self-serve price — phorest.com/us/pricing is a quote request, not a price list. Any dollar figure you see quoted online for Phorest is a third-party estimate, not Phorest's official number. Treat it accordingly.
What third-party trackers estimate (and why to hold it loosely)Because Phorest's real price is behind a quote, the only public numbers come from third-party software directories, and they're estimates. Capterra's Phorest listing and similar trackers put the range at roughly $99–$299/month, with the "Grow" plan estimated around $199+/month.To be completely clear about what that means:These are third-party estimates, not figures Phorest published or confirmed. The actual number you'd be quoted depends on your salon size, staff count, and add-ons — and could land above or below that range.I'm citing the estimate so you're not flying blind, not presenting it as Phorest's official pricing. For that, you have to request a quote. If a precise dollar figure matters to your decision (it should), the only reliable way to get one is to ask Phorest directly and read the quote they send back. What Phorest is actually good atNone of the above is a knock on the product. Phorest earns its reputation:Marketing depth. Automated campaigns, client reactivation, reputation management, review generation — this is Phorest's center of gravity, and it's strong.Multi-staff operations. Staff scheduling, commission tracking, reporting across a team. It's built for a salon with a front desk and several chairs.Retention machinery. Loyalty, client segmentation, targeted re-booking nudges — the kind of thing that moves the needle when you have hundreds or thousands of clients on file.If you run an established salon with staff and a marketing budget, Phorest is a credible, capable choice. That's the buyer it's designed for.Where it's likely more than a solo chair needsThe flip side of "robust, marketing-heavy platform for established salons" is that a solo stylist or a two-chair studio is probably paying for depth they won't use — and, at the estimated range above, paying a meaningful monthly figure to do it.A solo stylist's problems are usually narrower and more concrete than what an enterprise marketing suite is built to solve:You don't have a team to schedule; you have your own calendar. You don't need a reactivation campaign engine; you know your clients by name. What actually costs you money is a Tuesday cancellation and dead time during a color's processing window.Phorest can do a lot. Whether a single chair can justify a lot — in both dollars and the overhead of learning a platform built for a front desk you don't have — is the honest question. For many solos, the answer is no, and that's not a criticism of Phorest so much as a mismatch of scale.Where a narrower tool fits insteadThis is the part where our bias is obvious, so weigh it accordingly. ChairCal is the opposite of Phorest by design: instead of a broad platform for established salons, it's a narrow tool for one chair, focused on two specific problems. The first is cancellation recovery through a priority blast — when a slot opens, your top regulars get texted one at a time, in the order you'd want them, each with a real short hold, rather than a shared list where the fastest tapper wins. The workflow is in How to fill a same-day cancellation. The second is Process Time: treating a color's processing window as bookable time instead of a solid block on your calendar.ChairCal's price is $19/month, listed publicly — no quote form, no sales call. It does far less than Phorest and isn't trying to compete with an enterprise salon platform. If you run a multi-staff salon that lives on marketing automation, Phorest is a real answer and we'd tell you so. If you're a solo chair losing money to cancellations, that's the narrow problem we built for. The ROI tool on our pricing page will size that problem in dollars for you.ReferencesPhorest.
